One of our favorite things about being here in Cleveland is that there are endless things to do.  There are so many amazing things to discover that it can almost seem overwhelming even knowing where to begin.  Here are some great resources and plenty of our HSSA favorites:

  • Cleveland Clinic House Staff Spouse Association (HSSA). Sign up on our website ccfhssa.org! We sponsor adult social events, sporting events, family fun activities, playgroups, volunteer opportunities, and much more for families, spouses and partners of CCF residents and fellows. Wonderful way to network and meet other couples and families
  • Cleveland Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. 334 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44114. (800) 321-1001. Check out The Cleveland Official Visitors’ Guide. Also, see the website for Cleveland restaurants, events and things to do.
  • New to Cleveland: A Guide to Rediscovering the City  is a book by Justin Glanville (2011). This is your complete guide to discovering the city of Cleveland with great information on neighborhoods, restaurants, real-estate, and more.
  • “Friday!” section of the Friday Plain Dealer newspaper. Excellent resource for upcoming events, family activities, storytimes, nightlife, festivals, concerts, etc. in the Cleveland area.
  • Local community/recreation centers. Call and request seasonal recreational brochures. Classes are offered for toddlers to adults and include many topics such as: cooking, fitness, sports, computers, crafts, summer camps, language, business, etc.
  • Macaroni Kids–Cleveland East and West is an excellent resource for families with children to find local activities. You can subscribe for email updates on the website or find updates on their Facebook page.
  • Ohio Motorists Association AAA. AAA provides maps and tour guide books for camping and sightseeing as well as travel agent services.

  • Ohio Travel Information. Information on exploring Ohio, outdoor activities, arts and culture, maps and traffic, etc.
  • University Circle. (216) 791-3900. Home of several museums, botanical garden, orchestra, etc. One of the music and cultural hubs of Cleveland. Their website includes a calendar of events. Must do events include: Parade the Circle (June) and Holiday CircleFest (December).
  • Goodtime Cruise Line, Inc. 825 E. 9th Street Pier, Cleveland, (216) 861-5110. The Goodtime III cruises the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie from Memorial Day through September. It is the largest luxury ship on the Great Lakes. Boat tours last approximately two hours. Luncheon, dinner, specialty cruises, city lights tour, happy hour, music, dancing and sightseeing are also available. Features include: catering, air-conditioned/heated main deck, lounge and pub, custom arrangements for your event. Check the website for the most current schedule and pricing.
  • Nautica Queen. 1153 Main Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44113. (216) 696-8888. Experience a view of Cleveland’s skyline aboard this ship. Unlimited buffet meal, coffee, tea or iced tea and and musical entertainment included with all cruises. Special New Years Eve Gala aboard the ship.
  • Trolley Tours of Cleveland. 2000 Sycamore Street,Cleveland, OH 44113. (216) 771-4484. “Lolly the Trolley” will take you on a fun tour of Cleveland to see many highlights throughout the city. Tours last 1 or 2 1/2 hours and depart from the Powerhouse @ Nautica on the West Bank of Cleveland’s Flats. The ticket desk is on the main floor of the Powerhouse (GPS users: 1101 Winslow Ave, Cleveland OH 44113 will take you to the parking lot where you pay for parking and proceed to Powerhouse building). Reservations required in advance.
  • Cedar Point Amusement Park. 1 Cedar Point Drive, Sandusky, OH 44870. (419) 627-2350. Known as “The Coaster Capital,” Cedar Point is located on a Lake Erie peninsula. It features 86 rides (including 18 roller coasters), 15 children’s rides, live shows, and other attractions. Adjacent is Cedar Point Shores Waterpark and other fun activities at Cedar Point Beach. The park is open May through October with limited hours in the fall.
  • Dave and Busters. 25735 1st St, Westlake, OH 44145. (440) 892-1415. This is an arcade and game center where you can watch sports. They also have food and drinks to enjoy at their bar and restaurant.
  • Fun-N-Stuff. 661 E. Highland Road, Macedonia. (330) 467-0820. Family fun center with roller skating, miniature golf, game arcade, laser tag, Kids World, etc. Open year round.
  • Idlewild Park & Soak Zone. 2574 U.S. 30. Ligonier, Pennsylvania 15658. (724) 238-3666. This family amusement park is located 50 miles east of Pittsburgh and well worth the drive. Admission includes entrance to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, storybook forest, a water park, kid friendly shows, playground and lots of great rides for all ages. Open May – October.
  • IX Center Indoor Amusement Park. (near the Cleveland Airport). (216) 265-7000. Rides for kids of all ages, video arcades, petting zoo and a miniature golf course are among the parks popular attractions. Open for 34 weeks each spring (usually March or April). The dates for 2018 are March 23-April 15.
  • Memphis Kiddie Park. 10340 Memphis Avenue, Brooklyn 44144. (216) 941-5995. Small amusement park specifically for young kids (most rides are only for children 50” or less). Open mid-April through mid-September.
  • Swings-N-Things. 8501 Stearns Road, Olmsted Township, OH 44138. (440) 235 4420. Popular destination for older school-age kids. Both indoor and outdoor activities such as go karts, miniature golf, bumper boats, batting cages, etc. Open year round.
  • Waldameer Water World. 1 Waldameer Road (main entrance) 220 Peninsula Drive (seasonal entrance), Erie, PA 16505. Family-owned and family-friendly amusement park with over seventy-five rides, slides, and attractions. Waldameer is home to the Ravine Flyer II Coaster, voted the 7th Best Wood Roller Coaster in the World. The park is open from May through September. You can purchase all-day wristbands or pay per ride with tickets. Includes free parking.
  • Adrenaline Monkey. 26800 Renaissance Pkwy, Cleveland. (216) 282-3100. Climbing wall, ropes course, climbing, jumping fitness adventure! Host camps, birthday parties, and fitness classes for adults and kids.
  • The Jumpyard 13700 York Rd, North Royalton, OH 44133. (440) 237-8100. Giant warehouse with lots of bounce equipment for older kids and a play area for younger children. Open play times and birthday parties offered.
  • Playground World. 4400 Renaissance Parkway, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128. (440) 729 0909. Indoor play on playground equipment and trampolines during free play times. Birthday parties offered too.
  • Pump It Up. 7007 Engle Road, Suite C., Middleburg Heights, OH 44130. (440) 234-7867. This inflatable fun zone is for kids of all ages. Birthday parties, open bounce and more.
  • Sky Zone. Indoor trampoline park. Several locations in Cleveland area.
  • Brainard Splash Park. 1840 Brainard Rd., Lyndhurst, OH 44124. (440) 442-5777. Call if the weather is cool, sometimes they close. A great local splash park. See website for adjusted admission policy & pricing.
  • Cedar Point Shores. (See Cedar Point above for details.) Cedar Point Shores is a water park located adjacent to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
  • Goldfish Swim School. 4670 Richmond Road, Suite 100, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128. (216) 208-3952. Indoor pool that offers swim lessons for infants up to 12 years old  as well as family swim times. The water is always heated to 90 degrees and changing rooms, hair dryers, and a small snack stand are available. A wonderful local swimming spot and the lessons are fantastic – ages 4 months and up.
  • Great Wolf Lodge. 4600 Milan Road, Sandusky, OH 44870. (419) 609-6000. Indoor waterpark for kids of all ages with activities, hotel, and restaurant on site. Frequent Groupons!
  • Kalahari. 7000 Kalahari Drive, Sandusky, OH 44870. (419) 433-7200. Indoor and outdoor waterpark, wildlife safari, rock climbing, zip line, etc. Hotel and restaurant on site.
  • Pioneer Waterland. 10661 Kile Road, Chardon, OH 44024. (440) 285-0910. Waterpark with six story high waterslides. Open late May to early  September.
  • Quarry Splash Park. Located at Quarry Park North. 4101 Monticello Blvd., South Euclid, OH 44121 (NE corner of Monticello & S. Belvoir). Great for the little kids. Hours: Monday – Friday 11AM – 4PM; Saturday & Sunday 12 Noon – 6PM.
  • Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park. 8091 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509. Travelers Choice Best Waterpark 2018. Open year-round. Includes a wave pool, ropes course, 9 water slides, lazy river, and little-kid friendly areas. Admission prices change based on the season and child’s age. Hotels and restaurants connected.
  • Cleveland on Foot  by Patience Cameron Hoskins is an excellent resource detailing area Metroparks, nature preserves, and historic neighborhoods.
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park Brecksville (1/2 hour south). (330) 657-2752. 22 miles of park land between Cleveland and Akron. Hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, scenic train rides, snow shoeing, cross country skiing and special events.
  • Cleveland Metroparks System (216) 635-3200. Open year round. The Metroparks System was established in 1917 to ensure public access to open spaces and conserve the many natural valleys of this area. More than 23,000 acres of 18 reservations surround Cleveland like an “Emerald Necklace”. Recreational, educational and historical activities are available to suit people of all ages. Maps and Metropark events are available at any nature center or by mail. These parks are definitely worth discovering.
    • Nature Centers: Brecksville, West Creek, Rocky River, North Chagrin and Canalway Reservations.
    • Golf: Cleveland Metroparks has eight courses located conveniently throughout Cuyahoga County. The golf courses vary from a sporting par three at Shawnee Hills to championship layouts at Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow, which challenge even the best golfers. Online tee reservations are available.
    • Swimming: Edgewater Beach, Wallace Lake, Hinckley Lake, Huntington Beach, Villa Angela and Ledge Pool.
    • Cross Country Skiing: Cross Country skiing is permitted on hiking, bridle, and all purpose trails (that have not been plowed). As well as the fairways and rough areas of Big Met, Little Met, Shawnee Hills, Senecca, Mastick Woods and Sleepy Hollow golf courses with a four-inch snow base. When conditions are favorable, cross-country ski trails are groomed at Big Met and Seneca gold courses. For cross-country ski conditions, call (216) 635-3270, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cross-country ski rentals are available at Big Met Golf Course in Rocky River Reservation when there is a four-inch snow base. For hours, call (440) 331-1070.
    • Tobogganing:  The Chalet at Mill Stream Reservation
    • Many other activities including boating, fishing, cycling, footgolf, rope course, etc.
  • Holden Arboretum 9500 Sperry Road, Kirtland, OH 44094. (440) 946-4400. Open year round on 3,500 acres. The grounds feature over 20 miles of trails that lead you through cultivated gardens and native forests. The Arboretum also features the Murch Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway 65 feet above the forest floor, and the Kalberer Family Emergent Tower, a wooden tower that rises 120 feet above the forest floor for breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Lake Erie Nature and Science Center 28728 Wolf Rd., Bay Village, OH 44140 (Huntington Reservation). Terrific exhibits, planetarium, outdoor animal area and trails. Year round nature programs for children and adults. Open every day from 9am-4pm.
  • Lakewood Park Lake Ave and Belle Ave., Lakewood. 31 acre lakefront park with great views of the lake and downtown Cleveland. Playground, sand volleyball, walkways, picnic areas, softball fields, etc.
  • The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes 2600 South Park Rd., Cleveland, OH 44120. (216) 321-5935. An excellent oasis in the city for a short hike with the family. Offers outstanding children’s programs and camps year-round.
  • Beaches (lifeguards on duty periodically in season): Most of these beach areas have fishing, playgrounds, picnic areas, and special events.
    • Edgewater Park. Cleveland. (216) 635-3200. Large sand beach, food stand.
    • Headlands Beach State Park. Mentor. (440) 466-8400.
    • Fairport Harbor. (440) 352-3620. Boating classes, food hut.
    • Huntington Beach. Bay Village. Picnic areas and cabana and beach chair rentals.
  • Downhill skiing/snowboarding
    • Alpine Valley Ski Area 10620 Mayfield Road, Chesterland, OH 44026. (440) 285-2211. Six trails, snow making ability, rentals, lessons, and snow tubing.
    • Boston Mills / Brandywine Ski Areas 7100 Riverview Road, Peninsula, OH 44264 (Boston Mills) 1146 W. Highland Road, Sagamore Hills, OH (Bradywine). (800) 875-4241. They have 18 trails, snow making ability, rentals and lessons.
  • Cross Country skiing

    • Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area (330) 657-2752 Must have at least 6” of snow. Recommended areas and trails on their website with many locations. They rent cross-country skis and snowshoes (some children’s sizes available).
    • Punderson State Park 11755 Kinsman Road, Newbury, OH 44065. (440) 564-2279. Cross-country skiing trails and other winter recreation.
  • Tobogganing
    • The Chalet at Mill Stream Run Reservation (440) 572-9990. Two refrigerated 700 foot ice chutes guarantee a day of fun and thrills. Chutes operate with or without snow from late November through mid-March (weather permitting). Facility nearby with fireplaces, snacks, TV and gathering room. Children must be accompanied by an adult and be at least 42″ tall to ride. Gloves/mittens required. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
  • Sledding
    • Metroparks (216) 635-3200. See website for sledding hills and information, including an interactive map.
    • Polar Blast Tubing Park 1146 W. Highland Road, Sagamore Hills, OH 44067 (next to Brandywine Ski Resort). (800) 875-4241. Offers snow tubing varying hours Thursday through Sunday.
  • Amish Tours
    • Amish Country Berlin, Sugar Creek and Walnut Creek. (1-1/2 hours southwest of Cleveland). The largest Amish population in the U.S. is here in Ohio where visitors can see the Amish way of life, producing most of what they need without the benefit of electricity or modern machinery. Tour Amish farms, visitor shops, bakeries and cheese factories. Very crowded during the summer months. Most things are closed on Sundays.
    • Burton Village East of Cleveland on Route 87. (440) 834-4204. A major point of interest for special events, including the Geauga County Fair in September, an outdoor antique flea market in June and September, and the Maple Sugar Festival, usually in April. This festival is great fun and we are told the best pancakes are at the high school. Burton town square is home to a few antique stores, specialty shops, and restaurants. Stop by the log cabin for information.
    • Middlefield Home to America’s third largest Amish community. While in Burton, drive a little farther to Route 608 and catch a glimpse of Amish horse and buggies. Also a cheese factory, Amish bakery and antique store.
    • Yoder’s Amish Home 6050 Route 515, Millersburg. (330) 893-2541. Buggy ride tour gives overview of Amish life.
  • Chagrin Falls Follow Chagrin Blvd. east from I-271 (30 minutes southeast). A quaint community with interesting shops, parks, and excellent restaurants. Site of the Chagrin River Waterfall. This is a popular and lively place, not to be missed!  Do not miss the Hot Air Balloon Festival over Memorial Day weekend! Check out Chagrin Falls Inn for a romantic weekend getaway.
  • Cleveland Metroparks Zoo 3900 Wildlife Way, Cleveland. (216) 661-6500. One of the oldest zoos in the country. Open daily from 10am – 4pm except December 25 and January 1. A great, enormous zoo, including several indoor areas. Has a wonderful Rainforest building with more than 600 animals in realistic habitats. Free on Mondays in the summer for Cuyahoga County residents (bring proof of residency). Free admission doesn’t include admission to the Rainforest, but is at a discounted price Mondays. Regular admission: adults $14.95, children ages 2-11 $10.95, children under 2 are free. Annual memberships available!
  • Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad (330) 439-5708 or (800) 4684070. Offers scenic rides on historic diesel locomotives through the Cuyahoga Valley. There are several routes to choose from. Among the most popular are the fall color train in October and the Polar Express in November/ December. Make your reservations early for the tickets sell out quickly. Runs late April through December.
  • Geneva, OH 45 minutes drive up I-90. Check out Ferrante’s Winery–good food and wine.
  • Hale Farm and Village 2686 Oak Hill Road, Bath. (45 minutes southwest). (330) 666-3711 or (800) 5899703 A working farmstead and village, depicting life in the mid 1800’s. Displays of candle making, blacksmiths, steam saw mill, etc. Open June through October. Hours are seasonal, from late May through October; call 330-666-3711 for more information. Admission: adults $10, seniors $9, children ages 3-12 $5, children 2 and under are free.
  • Hudson (45 minutes south). A small, picturesque New England-style town with a rich history including as a recognized stop on the Underground Railroad. Main Street is quaint and lined with several specialty stores, including a drug store which has an old fashioned lunch counter serving ice cream. First and Main shopping mall is here as well.
  • Lake Metroparks Farmpark 8800 Chardon Road (Route 6), Kirtland. (45 minutes east). 1-(800) 366-FARM Open year round Tuesday-Sunday 9am to 5pm. This 235 acre farm makes a wonderful family outing to see animals and exhibits about life on the farm. There are several special events year round. Admission: adults $8, children ages 2-11 $6, children under 2 are free. Memberships available for purchase.
  • Mapleside Farms 294 Pearl Road, Brunswick. (330) 225-5576. This 4,000 tree apple orchard surrounds a 300 seat restaurant, apple house, bakery and ice cream parlor. Tours of apple picking and grading, storage and cider mill available. No admission charge, open year round, closed Mondays.
  • Marblehead Best known for its photogenic lighthouse and a lakefront full of artists studios and intriguing shops. Nearby is scenic downtown Port Clinton, one of the areas most popular fishing ports.
  • Patterson Fruit Farm 11414 Caves Road, Chesterland. (30 minute northeast). (440) 729-l964. Pick your own fruit: strawberries in June, apples in September/October, and try the pumpkin patch in October. While you are there, stop in the bakery for delicious donuts and pies. Family Fun-Fest during October which makes a great outing with the kids.
  • Presque Isle State Park 301 Peninsula Dr., Erie, PA  16505. (90 minutes east on I-90) (814) 833-7424 Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. The peninsula is flat with sandy life-guarded beaches and paved paths for walking, biking, rollerblading, etc. There are many picnic areas and boat ramps. Admission is free. The park closes at dusk.
  • Rosby Bros. Greenhouse and Berry Farm 42 East Schaaf Rd., Brooklyn Heights. (216) 661-6102. Pick your own fruit including red raspberries (until first hard frost) and strawberries in June.
  • Summer Festivals. Ohio has tons of summer festivals around the state. Visit the Ohio Festivals and Events Association website for a complete list and schedule.
  • Terminal Tower Observation Deck 50 Public Square, Downtown Cleveland. (216)-736-7646. Open April-December. Open noon-5pm on Saturdays, noon-4pm on Sundays. This observation deck offers a spectacular 360 degree view of the city. Fun to do on a clear day. Admission: adults $5, children 5 and under are free.
  • Thorncreek Winery and Gardens 155 Treat Rd., Aurora. (330) 562-9245. Open Thursday through Saturday. Weekly live music and various events year round. Excellent wines. Outdoor barbecues in the summer.

AAA is a good place to obtain maps and tour books. We recommend you keep a map of Cleveland and the state of Ohio in each car for handy reference. Also call 1-800-BUCKEYE for visitor/tourist information statewide.

  • Children’s Museum of Cleveland 3813 Euclid Ave. (216) 791-7114. This museum offers a multi-sensory, creative learning environment with permanent and changing exhibits. A fun place to play during the winter months! Recommended for ages 1-8.
  • Cleveland Botanical Gardens 11030 East Boulevard, University Circle. (216) 721-1600. The Botanical Gardens are a complex of beautiful flower and herb gardens with fountains, including the Hershey Children’s Garden, surrounding a building which houses an extensive book and video library, exhibition halls, and a lovely gift shop. There are frequent talks, luncheons, children’s activities, and special displays. The Center may give gardening and landscaping advice over the phone, or send a professional to your home. Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 10am-5pm;  Wednesday 10am – 9pm, Sunday 12-5pm; Closed Mondays. Admission: adults $12, children ages 3-12 $8, children 2 and under are free. A year long pass is great for families – especially the winter time.
  • The Cleveland Museum of Art 11150 East Boulevard, University Circle. (216) 421-7350. This internationally known museum offers an extensive permanent collection of masterpieces from all cultures and periods. Traveling exhibitions, music recitals, and dance performances are also regularly featured. When you’re finished browsing the extensive collection, grab a bite to eat at the delicious Provenance Café (reservations are available). The museum is free of charge to visit. Closed on Mondays.
  • The Cleveland Museum of Natural History 1 Wade Oval, University Circle. (216) 231-4600. This museum features the history of mankind and the natural world, a Planetarium, and an all new wildlife center showcasing live animals indigenous to the area.The museum houses many terrific, visiting exhibitions and a large gift shop. Open: Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm; Wednesday, 10am-10 pm; Sunday 12-5pm. Admission: adults $17 ($8 after 5pm on Wednesdays), children ages 3-18 $14, children 2 and under are free.
  • The Great Lakes Science Center 601 Erieside Ave., Downtown. (216) 694-2000. The GLSC is America‘s ninth largest interactive science museum. Offers over 400 exciting, hands-on exhibits, the OmniMax theater (tickets cost extra to do this), the Polymer Funhouse play area for children ages 7 and under, The Science Store, and a cafe. Open daily (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day) 10am-5pm (hours subject to change). General Admission: adults $16.95, children ages 2-12 $13.95, children under 2 are free.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA) 11400 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. (216) 421-8671. Located in the Uptown District, just north of University Circle, at the corner of Euclid Ave. and Mayfield Rd. Hours: Tuesday-Sunday 11am-6pm. Open late Fridays until 9 pm. Closed Mondays. General Admission- adults $9.50, seniors 65 and over $6 for seniors, students (with valid ID)$5, children 5 and under are free. First Saturday of the month is free admission.
  • National Inventors Hall of Fame 221 South Broadway St., Akron. (234) 678-6692. This museum celebrates the inventors who created the things that shape our everyday lives. Discover the inventor in you through interactive exhibits that will stimulate your imagination and creativity. Open: Tuesday – Friday, 10am-4:30pm. Admission is free.
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame 2121 George Halas Dr., Canton. (330) 456-8207. This is a large Hall of Fame complex consisting of twin enshrinement halls, fan-activated devices, a movie theater, and a store. Open: 9am-5pm every day except Thanksgiving and December 25. From Memorial Day-Labor Day, 9am-8pm. Admission: adults $25, seniors 65 and over $21, children ages 6-12 $18, children 5 and under are free.
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum 1100 Rock and Roll Blvd., Cleveland. (216) 781-7625. Located at E. 9th St. and Erieside Ave., overlooking the Cleveland waterfront. Designed by I.M. Pei, this structure is hard to miss. Housed inside this huge glass pyramid are some of Rock and Roll’s finest artifacts including clothing, instruments, music, and much more. The museum store sells music and memorabilia. There is a snack bar on the 3rd floor. Open: 7 days a week, 10am-5:30pm; Wednesdays and summer Saturdays until 9pm. Admission: Free for Cleveland city residents (does not include other municipalities like Beachwood, Shaker Heights, etc.) General admission $26. There are several paid parking lots within close walking distance.
  • The Western Reserve Historical Society Museum 10825 East Blvd., University Circle. (216) 721-5722. Founded in 1867, the Historical Society consists of several parts:
    • The Crawford Auto/Aviation Museum houses over 200 rare vehicles as well as a cobble-stoned street of mock turn-of-the-century shops. This is one of the finest auto museums in the world and a real treat for automobile lovers.
    • The History Museum houses American and European furnishings from the 18th century to the early 20th century. Also displayed are decorative arts, silver, and an extensive costume collection. They also host special and traveling exhibits. Also has a carousel, admission includes two rides.
    • The two museums are open Tuesday through Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12-5pm. Admission: adults $10, seniors $9, students $5, children ages 3-12 $5, children 2 and under are free.

  • Blossom Music Center 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls. (330) 920-8040. (35 min. south). Blossom is the summer home of The Cleveland Orchestra and a superb venue for many popular music concerts. During the summer, children attend Blossom concerts for FREE with an adult ticket. This complex is comprised of an outdoor pavilion (stage and covered seating) and a grand sloping lawn for seating up to 15,000 people. The acoustics at the facility are second to none and the surrounding environment (the Cuyahoga National Park) are exquisite. Take a picnic supper and enjoy a meal under the summer stars! A restaurant and several snack bars are also available. Wine and beer may be purchased as well. Children are welcome. Don’t miss it!
  • Cain Park 14591 Superior Road, Cleveland Heights. (216) 371-3000. This 22-acre facility has a park, toddler pool, art gallery, theater and amphitheater. Interesting and diverse programs are presented throughout the summer; all are affordable if not free. Plenty of free parking.
  • Cleveland Institute of Music 11021 East Blvd., University Circle. (216) 791-5000. This renowned conservatory provides outstanding music instruction to both children and adults, as well as a wide range of free concerts by conservatory students, professors, and visitors.
  • Cleveland Opera Theater 5000 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. (216) 512-0268. The Cleveland Opera Theater performs professional mainstage productions to honor the legacy of opera. The company also has many FREE community outreach programs to build the current audience base and foster the arts in Cleveland. Educational programming opportunities are available to both adults and youth.
  • Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall 11001 Euclid Ave., University Circle. (216) 231-7300. Cleveland has a world-renowned orchestra, which has been rated the best orchestra in the country by Time magazine. The program is always exceptional and Severance Hall has an elegant interior. You won’t want to miss hearing the symphony while you are in Cleveland, either at Severance Hall or Blossom Music Center (see Blossom Music Center above). Many guest conductors and famous classical musicians grace the stage throughout the year. Special children’s concerts are also performed at a very reasonable price.   • The Music Settlement 11125 Magnolia Dr., Cleveland. (216) 421-5806. The school is based in a historic mansion within University Circle, just a short drive from the Clinic. The Settlement provides music education for all ages (and a wide variety of instruments) and music therapy for those with special needs. Exciting recitals and concerts are also performed. They have outstanding children’s program (music lessons start at birth) and a very highly ranked preschool and day school. A second campus is on the west side.

Locally known as “The Q,” Cleveland’s new Gund Arena is the host to many cultural and sports events (see next page) including Disney on Ice, Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and varied musical performers. The library offers great free classes for children of all ages – daily story times, crafts, and even special shows are given regularly. A children’s video library is also available.
  • Cleveland Metroparks Zoo & Rainforest 3900 Wildlife Way, Cleveland. (216) 661-6500. Open year round – the Rainforest is an excellent way to spend an afternoon during the winter. On Mondays, the Zoo is free with proof of residency in Cuyahoga county, and the rainforest is discounted. Don’t miss the opportunity to view surgeries and procedures on the animals at the veterinary building. Take a ride on the Circle of Wildlife Carousel which features 64 beautiful hand-carved wildlife figures.
